Stop buying boring office laptops and get more productive teams!

One of the major challenges when trying to building high performance teams is the very notion of building a team. All to often companies focus on processes, escalation chains and all manner of things to facilitate the work that teams are supposed to carry out but fail to spend the time to let a group of individuals actually grow into a tight team.

We fail to see that they need time, resources and support to be able to become a team and carry on trying to support them by doing the same old things we have always done.

Think back to when we were kids and went to kindergarten. I understand this time period was different for different people but many of us formed tight groups who were prepared to face any challenge the world could throw at us together. Granted we knew very little and probably would have had a hard time even fixing a flat tire if it actually presented itself. But the feeling of belonging, of not being afraid to face a challenge since you had your friends and tackling challenges together no matter how impossible they actually were still existed. Why?

Imagine the environment in which we found ourselves. A supportive environment where the teacher guided us in the right direction and gradually introduced more and more knowledge into our worlds. But there was also something else, something I still saw when I lasted picked my youngest up from kindergarten that enabled them to become super tight. They got to experience and play together.

Through play and fun they got to know each other, they tested boundaries, they figured out communication and cooperation. They learned to take turns, to problem solve, help each other with chores, offered suggestions instead of commands and they learnt to give praise. In short, having fun together and playing helped them become a team. Why did we stop seeing the power in this when we grew up?

So what does this non scientific rambling boil down to? The very simple idea of helping our teams get the option to socialize, play and have fun together.

So no, changing the type of computers you buy is no silver bullet that will magically create high performance teams and the title is a bit misleading. But enabling them to socialize and play together isn’t. So if you for example know you have a team comprised of people who like to game in their spare time, perhaps we could help them out by enabling them to do it as a team. So when it’s time for the next upgrade don’t spent it on overpriced office laptops with mediocre performance, instead make sure your next upgrade contains GPU’s that they can game on. Or if they share some other common interest, see if there is a way to facilitate it. It could result in helping your team to socialize, play and bond more. All things that could help them turn into more effective teams.
